Step 1: Assess Space Requirement  

Begin by evaluating the IPR needed per contact (e.g., 0.2mm, 0.3mm, 0.5mm). Use an IPR gauge or follow your orthodontic treatment plan.  

Step 2: Begin with the Shorter Bur (Red Ring, 5mm) to initiate enamel reduction. This diamond is ideal for minimal spacing needs or enamel contact “breaking.”  

Step 3: Switch to the Longer Red Ring Bur (10mm) when more enamel needs to be removed.  

Step 4: Use the Flame/Knife-Edge Bur (Red Band, 4mm, 3.1mm dia) for final shaping or adjusting contour of the enamel surfaces; especially useful in posterior contacts or labial/ buccal bevels.  

Step 5: Use Yellow Ring Burs (10mm & 5mm) to smoothen the surfaces.  

Step 6: Check Reduction. Always confirm with an IPR gauge or orthodontic feeler strip. Polish or refine edges if necessary using a fine disc or polishing strip. 

• Always use with copious water spray to minimize heat and protect the pulp.  Avoid staying in one area for too long—move with light, sweeping strokes.  Use finger rests to maintain control.
