Step 1: Complete Your Preparation  

• Using the correct diamond burs and to the best of your understanding, complete the gross tooth preparation. 

Step 2: Choose the Gauge  

• Select the appropriate thickness (1 mm, 1.5 mm, 2 mm, or 3.5 mm) based on the restorative material and area of prep.  
• 1 mm (Yellow) – For non-functional cusps (LiDiSi, PFZ, metal, zirconia)  1.5 mm (Blue) – For functional cusps (LiDiSi, PFZ); non-functional cusps (PFM)  2 mm (Green) – For functional cusps in PFM preparations  
• 3.5 mm (Pink) – For significant PFM reductions involving antagonist teeth  

Step 3: Place the Gauge and Perform the Push Test 

• Have the patient bite down in Maximum Intercuspation and try to push the PrepGauge strip between the prepared surfaces  
• Use the wider arm (10 mm) for molars  
• The narrower arm (7 mm) for smaller teeth  
• The tip (1 mm) for mandibular anteriors  

Step 4: Make Your Assessment  

• Based on whether the gauge pushes through or not, you can quantify the adequacy of reduction. 
• Cannot push the gauge→ Inadequate reduction 
• Minimal resistance → Adequate clearance  
• No resistance → Over-reduction or improper occlusion
